UK Grid Connections FAQs
Enquiries and Acronyms
Answers to questions asked on a regular basis
Q. What is competition in connections?
A. Not all new connections to the electricity distribution network are made by the local DNO. A customer can choose to use an alternative provider for some connections work known as "contestable work". Contestable work can be carried out by a DNO, an independent distribution network operator (IDNO) or an independent connection provider (ICP).
Q. What is an ICP?
A. An ICP is an independent connections provider and can provide alternative options to the distribution network operator or transmission network operator. They can carry out all contestable design, construction, and commissioning.
Q. What is NERs Accreditation?
A. The National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) is a UK wide accreditation schemes operated by LRQA. Its purpose is to assess the technical competence of independent connections providers to design, project manage and carry out low voltage and high voltage connections.
The aim of NERS is to encourage competition within the utility sector and yet at the same time ensure that the approved providers meet minimum requirements. This should ensure that independent connections providers are able to execute high quality and safe connections as is produced by UK Grid Connections Ltd.
Q. What is an IDNO?
A. Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) are similar to DNOs in the fact that they also own, operate and maintain electricity infrastructure. The networks they adopt are the new, installed assets, such as connections to new developments, which will connect back onto the DNO's network.
Q. What is an Asset Value (AV)?
A. An asset value is a price agreed with the IDNO for purchase of a clients’ network or part off. Following sale of the network the IDNO becomes responsible for maintaining that network including asset replacement, outages, faults and repairs
Q. Can UKGC provide IDNO Services ?
A. Yes, we can arrange your asset value from one our approved IDNO suppliers, take care of your connection and legals and refund 100% of the asset value to the client.
Q. What is a transmission operator?
A. A TNO is the owner and operator of the 275/400kV transmission network i.e., National Grid, Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern.
Q. What is a DNO?
A. A distribution network operator (DNO) is the owner and operator of the local distribution network LV to 132kV i.e., Northern Power Grid, UK Power Networks, National Grid (formally Western Power Networks) Scottish Power Networks (SPEN) Scottish and Southern Networks (SSEN).
Q. What is Ofgem?
A. Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator (the office of gas and electricity markets).
Q. What is a Transmission Substation?
A. A Primary substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or perform any of several other important functions. Between the generating station and consumer, electric power may flow through several substations at different voltage levels. A substation may include transformers to change voltage levels between high transmission voltages and lower distribution voltages, or at the interconnection of two different transmission voltages.
Q. What is a Distribution Substation?
A. A distribution substation transfers power from the transmission system to the distribution system of an area. It is uneconomical to directly connect electricity consumers to the main transmission network, unless they use large amounts of power, so the distribution substation reduces voltage to a level suitable for local distribution.
The input for a distribution substation is typically at least two transmission or sub-transmission lines. Input voltage may be, for example, 132kV, or whatever is common in the area. The output is a number of feeders. Distribution voltages are typically medium voltage, between 33kV and 11kV, depending on the size of the area served and the practices of the local utility. The feeders run along overhead lines, underground cables, and power the distribution transformers at the customer premises.
Q. Who are UK Grid Connections Ltd?
A. UKGC are a group of experienced engineers and project managers who have worked in the contracting element of the power industry since before the inception of competition in connections. Experienced in the design and construction of substations and its infrastructure within the commercial and industrial, renewables and private network sectors (water, oil, gas, petrochemical, public and private sectors) We provide reasonably priced, quality engineered high voltage solutions and grid connections to our clients.
Q. What is Construction, Design and Management (CDM)?
A. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, also known as CDM Regulations or CDM 2015, which came into force on 6 April 2015, are regulations governing the way construction projects of all sizes and types are planned in the UK. Replacing Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, CDM 2015 is the latest update to the regulations that aim to improve the overall health, safety and welfare of those working in construction. These regulations offer a very broad definition of what construction works are- everyone involved in a construction project, including home maintenance and improvement works, has responsibility for health and safety.
Q. Can UK Grid Connections Provide CDM?
A. Yes, UK Grid Connections Ltd offers full Principal Contractor duties where required. We are currently providing these services on substation construction projects.
Q. Do UK Grid Connections Have a Safety, Quality and Environmental system?
A. Yes, UK Grid Connections has a full integrated management system that covers safety, health, environmental and CDM.
